Around the Seine campsite, discover Normandy and its varied landscapes, architectural, cultural, historical and environmental heritage, making it one of France’s most visited regions. The region is also rich in fascinating history, from the Vikings to the D-Day landings in June 1944. Thanks to the efforts of the Comité Régional du Tourisme and its partners, the region is making the most of its assets by stepping up its promotional activities.
Visit Jumièges Abbey
Just 1 km from the campsite, discover Jumièges Abbey, with its white towers rising almost 50 metres from a loop in the Seine, always a source of surprise and admiration for visitors.
Its destruction in the 19th century earned it the title of “France’s most beautiful ruin”, and the image of a romantic open-air site. Jumièges Abbey is one of the oldest and most important Benedictine monasteries in Normandy.
While to date we have been unable to identify any remains from the period of its foundation in the VIIᵉ century, recent excavations at St. Peter’s Church have made it possible to date its construction to the end of the VIIIᵉ, making this edifice a unique testimony to a Carolingian Christian church. This archaeological interest in no way detracts from the emotion aroused by a visit to the abbey church of Notre-Dame, a jewel of Norman Romanesque architecture.
In order to preserve the monument’s authenticity, the reconstruction of Jumièges was not envisaged. However, consolidation and masonry protection work is regularly scheduled to preserve as much as possible of its structure and decoration, and to ensure its safety.
